I am the lead teacher for Traditional Cooking School – an online cooking school I created to honor my grandmother’s cooking traditions and preserve them so that future generations can enjoy the health benefits, flavors and fun of traditionally prepared foods.

And I’m the author of Fermenting and Complete Idiot’s Guide to Fermenting Foods.

But I wasn’t always a pro in the kitchen. I remember when my kids were little. I had one in my arms, one under my feet, and one standing on a kitchen chair next to me.

Just trying to get a warm meal on the table was mayhem. I used to daydream about the day when they would be old enough to cook dinner for me… or even just help a little by peeling carrots and stirring the soup.

And then that day came. The kids were older, happier, helpful, good fun… and they could cook! What changed?

Well, time went by of course. Kids have this funny way of growing taller. (I’m not going to lie, time solves a lot of problems.)

But the other thing that happened is something I DIDN’T do: I didn’t kick my kids out of the kitchen. The other moms told their kids to “go play while mommy makes dinner” or yelled, “get out of my way!”

But I did something radically different: I thought about the different skills you need to run a kitchen, organized them by age and ability, and then started teaching the kids to cook. It was slow going at first. And there were a lot of messes.

But eventually, I settled on a system that worked for my whole family. The littlest one could push the buttons on the blender. The middle one could chop, sort, and stir. And the oldest could debone a chicken better than a world-class chef.

I found myself wondering, “Could this system work for other families?”

So, I contacted my friend Jami Delgado at Eat Nourishing. And we got to work.

We polished the techniques, organized the tools, developed recipes, made videos, and took darling pictures of our kids making pancakes in the kitchen. It was a blast!

Can You Boil Water?

One of the myths of “mommy-ing” is that the best moms are just born that way. They can cook, clean, read bedtime stories, and teach character lessons… all at the same time.

But the truth is, running a home is a learn-on-the-job crash course in teamwork, creativity and generosity. And that plays itself out every day in the kitchen.

My kitchen struggles came down to 2 things:

I wasn’t a very good cook.

I wanted the kids to help cook, but I didn’t know how to teach them.

The result? Big-time frustration, temper tantrums, and unhealthy food that didn’t taste good.

I would have loved to shorten the struggle and learning curve of those early years.
